2009 SEGUE RRV SINIGIANI VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
205 cases

The 2009 Segue Russian River Sinigiani Vineyard Pinot Noir has my handprints all over it. For the first time I did not buy another grower’s grapes. I grew my own. Letting someone else make all the viticulture decisions was never a first choice for me. But as a small-lot winemaker I didn’t have the muscle of larger wineries to dictate the growing methods of harvesting schedule that I wanted. Then a vineyard with Dijon and Pommard clones (115, 667,777) became available to lease near the custom crush winery where I produce Segue, and I jumped at the change.

In 2009, after many struggles and setbacks, its vines sang out in early fall with a chorus of beautiful berry notes—dark cherry, plum, and more, while delivering dense clusters laden with concentrated flavors. All of aches and soreness that come with pruning and hand-tending 3000 vines while whacking weeds between rows suddenly seems incidental. A year’s labor evolves into fruit that holds the promise of delicious wine. All climatic conditions have to be perfectly aligned for that to happen. In 2009, they were.

I’m proud to report that just as we did well by the vines, they did well by us. Pure succulent fruit, true Russian River character, and full-bodied intensity: they all shine through in this, the first and last Segue Sinigiani , Enjoy.
